Nursery room decor ideas - PEPA AND CO

Designing a nursery for your baby-to-be can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it can also seem a little daunting, especially if you don't know where to begin. All rooms in your house should tell a story about your life and reflect the values of your family, yet still show personality and have its own design style including your children’s room.

Children spend so much time in their bedrooms – they use it for sleeping, playing and working. Which means, it needs to be a space where they feel their best and can feel truly comfortable. Their bedroom can shape their personality, likes and dislikes. Decorating your little ones nursery room gives you the opportunity to get creative, let your imagination run wild just like your little ones will once they grow.

As your child grows, don’t be afraid to switch up their room. Children love change and this can apply to their room décor… You can switch up the wallpapers, add new items and move the furniture all to change the feeling of the room.

If you’re looking for some inspiration you’ve come to the right place, here’s some of our favourite nursery room décor trends that you could apply for 2020:

NEUTRAL

Some may say there’s no good surprises left in life but even with rise of the gender reveal party a lot of parents are still deciding to wait for the biggest surprise left in life! If this is the case, you will need to create a gender-neutral nursery so that way it’s suitable for all. Sticking to neutral colours doesn’t mean the room has to be any less fun or creative - if you stick to a white, off-white, or ivory colour palette, consider a pop of design as the accent with bold wallpaper instead of the typical pink or blue colours.

BESPOKE

Bespoke furniture allows you to create a personalised space for your little one. Brands such as Dragons of Walton Street can transform an idea, colour theme or favourite story, into a beautiful, inspiring and functional interior. So whether you had a favourite book whilst growing up or a specific character in mind – bespoke furniture enables you to create a nursery space that is special to you. This beautiful vintage car bed from Dragons of Walton Street is finished with sophisticated fibreglass panelling and chrome accessories, it's the first of its kind and even comes complete with car keys! Your little one would be be transported to sleep in style in this truly unique piece of furniture.

DIY MURAL WALL

We love seeing parents expressing their creativity in the nursery. You don't have to be an artist to create a wall mural in your home, but it can give a room a unique and personal touch. You can DIY your own simple mural with tape and a handful of paints or buy pre-made wallpaper just like the image above. This can give you the opportunity to create something personal that will be unique to you and your nursery.

FLORALS

Florals are always on trend and timeless, meaning you won’t need to redecorate for years to come. And this trend will get you to think big! Think floral wallpapers on a huge scale. The key to pulling off this rustic style is most definitely the scale of the print, allow yourself to get creative and think outside of the box. This image is taking from Liberty London who are known for their bold floral prints.

 SAFARI

Bring the outdoors inside with an animal inspired nursery! Think animals on safari, outdoorsy bedding, and nature-inspired wall decals, all equally perfect for a baby girl, boy, or gender-neutral space. It’s also a great way to create an educational space for when your little ones start to grow. You could either personalise your little one's room with his or her first initial, spelled out in twigs and faux flowers. Another amazing creation from Dragons of Walton Street can be seen above with their bespoke Jeep bed which is every explorers dream! Complete with working headlights, upholstered back board and personalised number plate - this bed will bring your little ones imagination to life.

Feeling a little overwhelmed with all your options? Take a moment to arm yourself with these helpful nursery design tips and tricks, and you'll be ready to create the best nursery room your little one will ever see:

  • Be practical! If you can, choose a quiet room close to your bedroom so you don’t have to walk far at night. Make sure that a cold room has adequate heating and a warm room has good ventilation. If the windows let in a lot of light, it may help your baby to sleep at night if you put black-out blinds or curtain linings up to keep the room dark.
  • Create your own mood board. Search online and in magazines for ideas and piece together the ones you love to create a mood board. Use it to help pick your colours, keep your ideas focused and pull your theme together. If you’re redecorating your little ones room, you can even get them involved.
  • Be smart with the investments. Changing the room doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune on new products and colours. It's smart to use what you already have. Move around the furniture, change up only one wall, add personal touch to old furniture, for example paint the shelves into different colour. Be creative and let your child be creative as well!
  • Add something personal. Adding lots of colourful pictures and family photos to the walls gives the room that personal touch. The baby definitely needs something to stimulate them by their changing tables and it’s also a great way for your baby to start recognising familiar faces.
  • Go for a style that they can grow into instead of out of. We all know our children grow up so fast, so it would be clever to go for a timeless style that you know your little one will love for years to come.
  • Have storage as a key element. Children come with a lot of stuff and besides being a great way to prevent all the toys being on display, it is a nice way to play around with different styles. Combining baskets with crates can create a playful effect.
  • Always think about safety. As well as making sure the cot meets the UK’s safety standard, we recommend creating a safe zone around the cot by positioning it away from windows, heaters, lamps, wall decorations and cords. Keep furniture that your baby could clamber onto away from the cot too.
  • Think outside the box. Just because furniture and accessories aren’t nursery-specific doesn’t mean that you can’t use them. The same can be said for wallpaper, fabric and wall stickers. Choose items and colours that you love.
  • Stock up on the essentials. Purchase all necessary diapers, wipes, lotions, and ointments well ahead of baby's arrival and put them away. Make sure that everything you need remains within arm's reach, so you are never tempted to take a hand off your baby.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute. Be sure to get your nursery project underway early, so there will be plenty of time to air out new furniture and freshly painted spaces. Getting a head start will also prevent stress and ensure that you will have enough energy to finish the job.
