The Royal Jubilee

The Royal Jubilee

Celebrating the Platinum Jubilee: a history of the Jubilee, how to teach your children about its significance, and (of course) a note on how to dress for it.

This year, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate 70 years of her service. There will be lots happening in the UK to commemorate the anniversary! You’ve probably already noticed the occasion by glancing at the diary; there will be a four day bank holiday weekend from June the 2nd to Sunday the 5th. While the little ones are probably looking forward to the extra day off of school, there’s lots of history to educate them on to make the day just as educational as it is fun!

First things first. It’s important to explain to your little ones why exactly Queen Elizabeth is such a remarkable individual.  No other British Monarch has lived or reigned as long as Queen Elizabeth. We also think it’s especially important for you to mention to the little ones that she is the only female head of state to have served for as long as she has! She has been one of the most influential and peaceful monarchs our world has known.

We want to help you explain to your kids exactly why the upcoming Platinum Jubilee is so special. First things first: what is a jubilee? A jubilee is an anniversary that marks an important event in the British monarchy. These anniversaries are given the names of precious materials like silver, gold, and of course, platinum. Platinum marks a 70th anniversary.

When celebrating Her Majesty the Queen’s service, we would be remiss not to mention her dress sense over the years. Over the Jubilee weekend, it would be especially fun to channel some of this impeccable and history-rich style with the kids.

We can’t help but think of hats, dresses, and jewelry. One of the things we have always loved is that the Queen’s wardrobe never heeds from bursts of bold colour. Each piece she wears is a reflection of different and important points in history.

In honour of Queen Elizabeth, over at Pepa & Co we have designed our own Jubilee collection. The collection embraces quintessential British styles using traditional handsmocked techniques that were popular Britain during and after the Queen’s own childhood.

To celebrate the Jubilee, why not dress for the occasion with the little ones? Bring out the brooches, the hats, the dresses, the blazers, and of course some spring and summer vibrant hues.

How might you celebrate the holiday with the family in festive style?

There are plenty of things happening in London and around the UK from June 2nd- June 5th to celebrate the Jubilee. Most of the events are child-friendly, and we encourage the kids to get involved in the occasion! On the 2nd of June, the Queen’s Birthday Parade of carriages, horses, and musicians will travel from Buckingham Palace. On the 5th of June, everyone in the UK is encouraged to have parties with their neighbors to celebrate.

Queen Elizabeth’s impact and legacy is powerful, and something that the kids will likely take an interest in learning about and celebrating. We hope that histories like the one we’re due to commemorate this June will inspire our own little ones to go and make a lasting legacy and difference in the world!
